The short papers are intended primarily to be reactions to the reading, so outside research is not required. For the long papers, I have supplied bibliographies, but you are encouraged to do additional reading and research if and when you have worked through most of the books I have suggested. Internet sources may NOT be used with one exception, internet versions of printed material. A thesis is a statement that you believe to be true that is controversial and interesting. Who could disagree? Therefore it is not controversial or interesting. Never state the obvious.

For this class, the first paragraph of a paper must give the thesis, as well as giving an overview and a sense of the organization of the paper. The introduction should clearly lay out the argument that is to follow. The rest of the paragraph then shows why the topic sentence is true. Evidence, not facts.

I want to know why your thesis is true, so any fact or conclusion must be related to the overall argument.

Make sure to consider the opposing arguments and the inconvenient facts, and tell me why they are wrong, irrelevant, etc. In addition to restating the thesis, the conclusion should suggest some wider implications or significance of your findings. Papers with incorrect citation will be returned without credit, and will suffer the appropriate lateness penalties until resubmitted. A footnote is required for all information that you did not know when you started this class — ideas, facts and statistics, not just quotes.

Oral Reports. You will have to give an oral report on your long paper, towards the end of the semester. Early in the semester I will form you into groups of people doing the same topic. The midterm and final will be a mix of short answer and essays. Some essays will focus on the textbook reading, some on the primary source documents. I do not grade on a curve. Note that if you plagiarize on a paper, you get a zero — and almost certainly flunk the course.
